This stabilised 50-500mm telephoto zoom lens by Sigma covers a range of focal lengths and has a magnification ratio of 10x, allowing you to use shutter speeds approximately four stops slower than would otherwise be possible.

A recent aquisition, I am delighted with this lens and would recommend it to anyone who has a need for it. For nature, sport, etc. it is perfect , considering the price. Just because it has a large zoom range it's not a general purpose lens and you would not like to cart it about all day. Having said that, it's not too bad for a 3 mile walk for a 60 year old. (me!) It is much lighter and smaller than the wonderful primes from Nikon san and Canon san and a fifth of the price. I find the lens cap impossible to fit with the lens hood in place, but maybe that's me! That's it, moans over. Still learning with this lens, my experiments have shown (please remember this only applies to me) that at sub 1/160 speed, it is better to have OS on, even with a monopod. Oh yes, you will need one and a ball head too. In good light it is possible to hand hold, at 1/250 @ F8, 400 asa. Auto focus is fast, up with the best, but I have not had the opportunity to try birds in flight yet. Testing has been limited to getting used to this magnificent piece of glass, but I am very pleased with my initial results. F8 is good. It has a useful 1:3 'macro' that will catch a dragonfly or wildflowers, no problem. I have been using this lens with a Nikon D300, but I would imagine my experiences apply to Canon and other users too. I did a lot of research before purchasing this and looked at the Sigma 200-500, slightly smaller, lighter, and cheaper it would seem that it is not in the same league optically. Yer pays yer money......... Unless I win the lottery, it is staying in my arsenal.	+ Value for money, an excellent starter lens for wildlife, sports and if you feel like it,stunning lanscapes	- Big and heavy, it is still much lighter than the major manufacturers prime lenses which cost 5 times as much	30/11/2010	10 out of 10
