Settings

Men tend to opt for more sober designs, some with a diamond feature. When it comes to choosing a ring, the type of metal and the thickness of the band are the most important criteria. Whether you prefer a flat ring, an alloy ring, a classic design or something more original, the choice is yours!

Women are spoilt for choice when it comes to wedding rings. Classic designs can be embellished with gemstones and diamonds going round the entire ring (bezel) or half of the band (a half bezel). A trilogy wedding ring is a more discreet choice as it only includes three diamonds.

There are three types of settings: the channel setting, bar setting and the prong setting. The first comprises gemstones mounted on parallel channels. The second is made up of gemstones set between two bars, making each individual stone stand out more. The third has a set of prongs on the ring to hold the stone in place.

Diamonds and the 4Cs

A diamond's value is determined by several criteria, including colour. Diamond colour scales range from D to Z. A D-graded diamond is colourless, with no hue, and thus is the most valuable.

Diamonds are also graded on the quality of cut, which is defined as follows: Ideal | Premium | Very good | Good.
Shapes include pear, princess, trilliant, marquise, oval, cushion, emerald, baguette, trapeze, radiant and heart.

Clarity relates to the visual appearance of a diamond. Internal characteristics are called inclusions, while surface defects are known as blemishes. Inclusions and blemishes are graded from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included 3). However, inclusions up to grade S12 are not visible to the naked eye.

Diamond quality is also determined by Carat weight. The size of a diamond does not reflect its weight.

Diamond prices increase exponentially according to the weight of the stone, which is calculated in levels. There can be a huge difference between a 0.89 carat diamond and a 0.9 carat diamond, as these two values belong to different levels.

Because large stones are rare, price increases are not proportional to weight: a 1.5 carat diamond is three times the weight of a 0.5 carat diamond, but the price can be five to seven times higher than a 0.5 carat stone.

Gold

Although gold is a soft yellow metal, it can be alloyed with other metals to harden and create colour variations such as pink and white. Depending on the amount of gold present, it can be 18 carats, 14 carats or 9 carats. The higher the number of carats, the purer the gold.
