Nikon Nikkor 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Lens

The versatility of this lens makes it a good choice as main lens, for DX range camera user. It has reasonably fast focus and having Vibration Reduction helps at full zoom, the lens being equivalent to 27-157.5mm (35mm film).

The big problem with this lens is its fragile lens mount, this is one of only two, in the Nikon range that are plastic. Every other lens produced by Nikon are metal lens mount’s and although this has kept the weight and price down, both are only minimal reductions and do not weigh up against how easy it is to break the mount with a slight tap the lens.

In conclusion it’s a good lens but you need to be careful with it and obviously it will wear the plastic bayonet mount against the cameras metal mount, however this would take a great deal of lens changing to do this.

I bought this lens as part of a kit deal with a D7000 camera from Pixmania who, as always, delivered my purchase quickly and which was very well packed.
The lens (on the D7000) is very responsive and initially looks like an good addition to my range of lens. My first impression is that this is a good general lens and will produce excellent quality results in most shooting circumstance. Provided the user is not looking for huge print enlargements this lens will serve most people well in general use.
For those who are more critical and/or use more specialist lenses they will find some shortcomings. There is very definitely softness at the extreme wide angle and wide open apertures. Stop down to f8 and use at 20mm onwards it is fine. It seems to deliver excellent results at 105mm. There seems to be distortion of one kind or another throughout the zoom range.
I look forward to comparing results with my other lenses such as 18-70mm and 12-24mm.
For the cost some things have to be sacrificed and the lens is a good compromise between cost and performance.
Finally I am very concerned about the plastic lens mount, the first I have owned on any lens. This is because I have a bad habit of picking up my cameras using by lens. On a D2X or other heavy camera that could be an accident waiting to happen...
All in all a good lens for most people in most situations.
