Philips MCD802/12 DVD Micro HiFi System This system is no micro - it's massive in size so take note of the dimensions if buying. Imagine two old VCR's stacked on top of one another and you'll be somewhere close, its that bulky. The speakers are also full size and non standard, don't expect they will fit neatly anywhere in a small room, and they're too big for standard speaker brackets as they are so long and very heavy. Nice looking though. A few things I noticed on unpackaging: The rotary volume switch is badly fit, its off centre in the circle. Removing the grill covers took off the rubber inserts on the speaker. The woofers are sprayed silver, but the coverage is inconsistent. Opening the disc drive is quite clunky and noisey, and the noise seems to echo through the unit case. Only had it a day and the mechanism gets confused quite easily, the motorised cover that lifts to allow the disc tray out sometimes tries to close while the disc tray is still out and vice verse. On reading data discs it is also quite audiable, but the system itself is silent when powered on and doesn't hum. Sound quality is disappointing for music, lacking tone and treble and verging on muffled at low volume. Film audio is however quite good and voices sound clear and easy to understand. The sound settings are very poor, barely any difference between the pre-sets, 'classic' being the least bassy. There are no options to adjust treble or bass yourself which this system really needs. If you want to listen to anything on it, even on low volume, its likely your neighbours will have to listen to it too! It's nice to have all those watts when you want them, but you don't have the option to turn them down when you don't. USB works fine, but if you have more than 300 or so folders/albums/movies/songs on one drive it can't read them. Picture quality from DVD is very good, the upscaler seems to do a good job. Divx is also pretty acceptable but can never be upscaled to near HD quality. If you're looking for a music stereo first and foremost steer clear of this unit. It's not a cute little micro for the bedroom either unless you want it as bedside tables. The blue power button stays illuminated though and is great as a night light.
