Canon's origins go back to 1937, when Precision Optical Industry.Co.Ltd was founded. This company produced Japan's first 35mm focal-plane shutter camera, which it named “Kwanon”, after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.

Canon Inc. was founded in 1937 and was the first company to develop and produce 35 mm and indirect X-ray cameras in Japan. The company later turned its attention to designing professional machines, developing Japan’s first plain paper photocopier in 1970. It then branched out and extended its activities, launching laser- and bubble-jet printers in the ‘80s.
