Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) comes from devices that have been designed to be used with a voltage rating not exceeding 1,000 volts for alternating current, or 1,500 volts for direct current.
Since 13 August 2005, the European Union requires that, under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, companies refurbish and reuse their Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
The directive imposes that companies take responsibility for Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) up to and including the end of their lifespan. Since 13 August 2005, products must include two markings: the date on which they were introduced to the market, and a symbol (a crossed-through dustbin for household goods) stating that the product should not be disposed of with general waste. The product must also include the manufacturer’s logo.
