Our environmental policy

Cartridge recycling

canon recycle

Canon’s environmental policy has been built on the fundamental principles outlined in the Group’s charter. It reflects Canon’s activities and the impact they have on the environment.

Actions speak louder than words

  • Canon’s technological advances should in no way be detrimental to the environment. The overwhelming success of the replaceable cartridge system incorporated in Canon’s fax machines, printers and photocopiers, prompted Canon to put its words into actions.
  • In 1990, Canon decided to pursue activities that would reduce the impact on the environment caused by an increasing number of used cartridges. Successful collection activities in Europe, Japan and the USA led to the creation of the world’s first recycling plant on the site of Canon Dalian in China.
  • By 1997, Canon’s cartridge collection activities had developed to include 21 countries. The effectiveness of these activities was reinforced by the creation of two new plants; each one being responsible for recycling products on a regional scale.

Convenient collection scheme – minimum effort required
  • Canon has implemented three different collection methods. Customers can either return their cartridges by post, keep them in designated collection boxes, or hand them over to their local retailer.
  • Cartridges and their packaging are collected at national points before being sent to Canon Bretagne, which is responsible for recycling products for the whole of Europe.
