Environmental sustainability is important to us at Western Digital. To that end, WD has designed eco-friendly hard drives with GreenPower™ Technology for WD® desktop, business, consumer and external hard drive products.
Based on extensive customer input indicating widespread support for ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliance, as well as for integrating the latest in engineering technology, WD developed this platform to offer our customers a range of more energy efficient hard drives.

The power required to run a drive increases with its capacity. The 1 TB hard drives available on the market have a typical power consumption of more than 13.5 watts. WD has designed the first 3.5-inch hard drives that offer significantly reduced energy consumption as their primary attribute.
WD's green drives provide an average reduced energy consumption of 4-5 watts compared with standard desktop drives, while still maintaining excellent performances.
This reduced energy consumption equates to reducing CO2 emissions by up to 60 kilos per drive per year - the equivalent of taking your car off the road for 14 days each year. This new platform makes it possible for our energy-conscious customers to build systems with higher capacities and the right balance of system performance, reliability and energy savings.

WD’s GreenPower technology is the first 3.5-inch hard drive platform designed to offer reduced energy consumption as its primary attribute. These drives provide an average reduced energy consumption of 4-5 watts compared with competitors’ drives, as well as ultra-cool, quiet operation and solid performances. The following technologies are used in WD's GreenPower technology platform:
IntelliPower™ fine-tuned balance of rotation speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significantly reduced energy consumption and solid performances. For each drive model, WD may use a different but invariable RPM.
Drives featuring GreenPower technology consume less power during start-up, which means more discs can start spinning at the same time. This ensures faster system set-ups, which is always a bonus for business customers.
IntelliPark™ Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading recording heads during idle mode to reduce aerodynamic drag. It also disengages read/write channel electronics.
IntelliSeek™ Calculates optimum search speeds for reduced noise, vibration and power consumption.
