Having multple (pc) users + smartphones + games console is a push for most 802.11g wifi systems, so having a new 'n' router from my ISP I was looking for range & performance improvements. I could not have been more wrong with the <other-brand> router they supplied.

The DIR-645 on the other hand has very much lived up to expectations and wifi is now usable 30-40m from the router and network speed is very good, without any changes to default settings seeing 140Mbs+ on most PCs and able to transfer 30MB file between PCs in under 20 sec. Seems really stable; no noticed drop-out or loss of connection to date.

I was somewhat sceptical about the smartbean technology, but once connected for a while you often see a jump in signal strength so seems to be doing something positive.

I no longer have any dead-spots in the house and the 'guest' wifi zone is popular with teenage visitors.

Only negative points are the set-up wizzard; could not get past system checks (wifi, firewall etc) but web-configuration menus are simple enough follow to set things up manually. Documentation is OK, but all on the CD-ROM and no real guidance for the inexperienced on how to best connect the router to the ADSL modem. No mention in any of the shipped docuementation of the USB shareport utility (need to download this from the D-Link FTP site), but works really well once you get it installed. The only other negative is the position of the GbE & USB ports on the back of the unit; this makes tidy routing of cables a little challenging but the unit still looks far neater on a bookshelf than 'normal' router with multiple antenna.

In summary, would recommend

Stable, high speed wifi with great range

some challenges with set-up wizzards & cable routing
